  Most amazing traditional Japanese experience at this onsen/hotel. Awesome private onsen, exquisite traditional Japanese food and amazing zen tatami hotel room with ocean view. Must visit!

  We were very confused by the lack of food at this ryokan. We booked our room and were told we could pay at the property for both breakfast and dinner. However, upon arriving for our 3 day stay we were told this would not be possible. There were no accomodations that could be made for us even with 3 days lead time to prepare a meal or even just breakfast for us. It was a sad feeling when other guests were jovially enjoying luxurious meals while we were sent out into the cold. There are not any restaurants nearby so this impacted our stay negatively as we had to go to hunting for food in blizzard like conditions. Otherwise the property is stunning and the views from this traditional ryokan are remarkable. Especially during winter with calm snow falling on the beach, it's breathtaking. Certainly take advantage of the private onsen which is free for the first use only. The public onsen which overlooks the sea is well maintained and usually not very crowded. The remodeled rooms are of the traditional style and true to the ryokans of old and the stay was very much appealing. We just wish there could have been a dining option available as we were the only ones without food while staying here.

  We had the most relaxing experience at Wakamatsu. For most of our 5 day stay, we felt like we were the only ones at the ryokan. The food was incredible and our hostess, Matsuyo, made our experience. We can’t wait to come back!

  Great service from beg to end. We got the same attendant the whole stay. The keiseki and breakfast is all fresh and seasonal. Not the best but good and satisfying. The place is well kept but there is signs of aging. The Onsen area is small but efficient. There is an indoor and outdoor bath. There is also a 1 time use per stay for a private Onsen. Warning: The water there is way hotter than the public Onsen.

  historical and amazing place to stay in hakodate. when you come they will give you green tea and home made cake, delicious cake (i even bought before i left). the staffs are all so polite and care so much to the guests. what i like so much their house rules for not using shoes around the hotel interior. this is good for hygiene. the room only 4 every floor make it exclusive and all have a view to the sea! room interior are cool cause it adopt from the japanese traditional house. the other part of the most interesting experience was kaiseki dinner style, it was wonderful; however it would be excellent if they reduce some beans and carbo. the selection of sake is abit limited, only one famous like dasai is served. it would be perfect to serve more local boutique sake.
