::WARNING: ONSEN (BATH) IS NOT INCLUDED IN ROOM RATE. Update to my review based on their response: it is this kind of obstinate reply from the staff that stops places such as the Monterey from improving or being competitive. They need to be more transparent in their listings! Original review: Over my decades of travel to Japan, this is the first hotel I have encountered that charges for use of their onsen (public bath). I purposely choose hotels based on their baths, so it was a tremendous disappointment to see they charged per use (JPY2200) or per day on top of the per use. This should make this clearer in their advertising and hotel listing. Rooms and facilities are otherwise average. Should have chosen another hotel...

::We have a room with three beds. If you plan on taking a shower, the shower head has two settings: mist and fine stream. The fine stream blasts a lot of water and will get water everywhere, especially outside the tub. For the fine stream, I had to adjust it to low. I tried the mist setting but did not like it. I recommend taking a bath or going to the spa. However, the spa and hot springs are not included in the room; you have to pay for it. Also, breakfast is not included; you have to pay for that as well. We only chose this hotel because it was cheap and in a good location. There is a mini-fridge and a closet, as well as a coffee and tea maker. Across the street, there is a Family Mart, and along the street, there is a McDonald's and many other restaurants. **Update - if you pay for hot springs for the first night you get to use the hot springs the next day for free, but only in the morning. The hot springs is very nice and relaxing. Enjoy!

::Wow Hotel Monterey in Kyoto was excellent all around, great location next to a lot of activities, staff was super helpful, good prices including inside parking, and the room was bigger than usual with notably comfy pillows! Thank you for providing phenomenal service at a reasonable price!! The one downside was the spa did not allow people with tattoos to enter. I understand the cultural relevance. This is an old custom that will hopefully adapt to include everyone. I've never been turned away yet when wearing tattoo coverings but I didn't feel like trying this time. We still had a great stay & appreciated a great experience!

::Rooms are decent. We stayed 6 nights in 2 double rooms for 3 adults for 6 nights. Quite squeezy for 2 adults with 24" luggage each, leaving not much movement space. Overall, the hotel is decent and clean and comes with bath tub. Other than check in/out, you will need to go to the reception area left. Other than that, you hardly get to come across any hotel staff upon entering the hotel premises as rooms are accessed via lifts on the right. Some TV upgrading going on during our stay there but not much of inconvenience experienced by us. 3 mins walk to a nearest station with no elevator or escalator. Walk further down if you need to access via elevator/ escalator. Location wise, close to nishiki market, shopping area, Kyoto Imperial Palace, Nijio Castle.

::Very old hotel. Do not trust the star rating of Japan hotels. For this one, the rooms are 2-stars (old furniture, super hard old mattress, old odors, bathroom is covered in old plastic). They invested just in the common areas, which look nice and polished. You’re not gonna get any quality service here, so expect minimum and don’t complain about anything.
