::We have a mixed review on this place. If it had been less expensive we would have shrugged at how tired the building was and their odd one towel policy. Loved the tatami mat room and futon beds even if the walls were scuffed up. The upstairs dining hall is uncharming but the food was fine - there is a nicer downstairs dining room that we used on the fourth meal. The onsen itself is nice and clean. Great location, close to bus stops and the shrine. We have stayed at nicer ryokans for the equivalent cost.

::It was a most pleasant experience. We are most appreciative of the excellent service provided by Mr Aravinda Kamnarathne at the reception. From the moment we arrived, he has been most attentive and helpful. He was most polite and answered all our queries clearly. Mr Kamnarathne has a pleasant demeanour and personality that represents your esteemed hotel very well. The other person we like to acknowledge and express our thanks to is Ms Satomi at the restaurant. She works diligently and with a smile. Her exceptional service at the table is quite remarkable! - even describing the dishes, especially the beef. Her movements were gentle, and in a unique way rather skillful and presented herself very well with smiles and politeness. They are both that impressive so much so that we would like to nominate them for staff of the month! Congratulations to the management for employing them.

::We had a wonderful experience staying here at Nikko .Hoshinoyado. It is a 5 star accommodation . The room we had was beautiful and the public bath was very nice. The elaborate dinner was quite a dining experience . We look forward to a return in the future.

::Traveling to Nikko, we wanted to stay at a hotel with tatami mat style room and Hoshinoyado did not disappoint! While many of the reviews said the rooms were dated, it was exactly what we were looking for! While the room had a slight smoke smell even if our room was designated non-smoking - we don’t know if it was other guests or the furnace. They also have a public onsen with 2 baths (one for men, one for women) as well as a private one you reserve can fairly cheaply for couples and families which we did for both nights. It was well kept and relaxing! We stayed for 2 nights and 2 days. The meals provided were delicious and plenty. The location was great for those wanting to explore the nearby temples. The best part was the kind and wonderful service they provided. There were English speaking staff to help us with any questions or concerns. The location provides free shuttle service to and from the train station.

::Like other reviews mentioned, the rooms are dated (booked a standard Japanese style room). But no complaints on my end given that both the food (we had 1 dinner and 2 breakfasts) and service were wonderful. Dinner was a multi-course affair with dishes presented beautifully, the highlight being the yuba (turned tofu when the fire runs out) served at the start. Breakfast was more than filling and delicious. The public bath was clean and well maintained, but a little small with only 4 shower booths in the men's area and the outdoor rotenburo with only space for 2 comfortably.
