::Sounkyo Onsen is nice and the area is gorgeous but this hotel is a disgrace: rooms are cramped, bathroom too small for even a child, futons too thin, guests are to clean their own rooms. Public areas: floors and walls filthy, laundry facilities don't work, Japanese staff speak no English (come on now, this is the 21st century!), South Asian staff do but clearly lack training in hospitality. Long lists of ridiculous rules are posted everywhere about what guests are NOT supposed to do (including opening the front door!). Onsen is just ok. The place is difficult to find: no English signs (unlike other hotels in the vicinity). And quite expensive. Overall: terrible. Avoid this place if you can.

::We saw a lot of mixed reviews about this Ryokan like establishment but since it was my first after living in Japan for 2 years I already knew what I was expecting. It’s made to accommodate a lot of people so mostly you won’t be payed proper attention to unlike most Japanese hotels/ryokans. Rooms are tatami sitting areas where you lay the futon by yourself, as for the onsen we were two females and we enjoyed the onsen. It was very warm and clean and included all the required cleansing items. Food situation isn’t so great in this area so if you weren’t able to book an 8 pm dinner at the Ginsenkaku than you can get it from the nearest combini there’s not many options but remember that also closes at 9pm.

::Stay away from this hotel. Dishonest hotel claims to have non smoking Japanese bedroom and in reality it stinks with smoke smell on the tatami mats beddings and walls. Upon asking for a change we were switched to a tiny twin room with no AC no bathroom facing a road. The Onsen downstairs is filthy and slippery. Meals are good. They focus a lot on tour groups. It could be loud as the bus unload and check in as well as breakfast rush. As we checked out asking for a refund of the difference they simply denied. We would have chosen other places if they were honest about non smoking rooms. Avoid at all cost. Wish there could be no stars or minus stars.

::BE NOTED IF YOU PLAN TO STAY DURING SUMMER SEASON. 1. Late July or early August is an extremely horrible season to stay without air conditioner. They don't have one in guest room. Opening the small window during night can cool you down, while this may make you catch a cold. 2. Dinner closes 8 PM, breakfast closes 9 AM. Be punctual about this rule! They can take your dishes away in the middle of the meal. They actually took my son's. 3. Be wise whether to include dinner. Dinner was hot (temperature) and salty. Looking at boiling bowl without air conditioning in the one and only restaurant wasn't pleasant. No refund even if you don't have dinner. 4. You have to place and set all the beds (futon) by yourself (in a room without air conditioning, again) and they don't clean up your rooms everyday when you stay for more than 2 nights, while they say they respect your privacy.

::Very good value for money. The supper option we opted for was one of the better ones we had during the trip - Ise lobster, plenty shrimps and crabs. The onsen was on the smaller side but was expected of a hotel this size. The location - close to the cable car station and also to the Ginga no taki falls make this a hotel a no brainer option.
