While the hotel may not seem like much from outside appearances, it is so much more than it seems. Really appreciated the great service - everyone was so kind and polite and nice. I felt personally welcomed and they made an effort to remember my name and welcome me daily. Despite their limited English, they really tried their best. The van pickups from the station were prompt and easy to get. On the last day, they even took a detour to drop me off in front of the station so I would not have to drag my luggage far. On that note, I would not recommend walking from Gora station but if the cable car is operating the walk from koen-kami is quite manageable. Room was clean and spacious. Would have been good to have a desk but I was happy to have a comfortable sofa and large bed. Rooms seemed recently renovated and well equipped. Breakfast was limited - it was a set with eggs/sausage/breads/salad and free flow coffee/tea/soup but the food was all good quality. Was especially blessed to have a free-flow promotion during my time there - they really mean free flow and they leave the bar open to mix any drink you’d like pretty much. Pretty good value for money! (I paid about 45000 yen for 2 nights for one)

Booked for 2 nights recently. Hotel is a steep uphill walk initially then short flat walk from Gora station about 12 mins if reasonably fit Or get the train two stops up to Koen Kami then it’s flat. The hotel will also whiz down and collect you in their van (5 min) . Our room was newly refurbished , spacious , separate shower and toilet facilities and large twin beds. Onsen facilities were a little dated but very nice , separate male and female facilities with small Sauna, inside and outside hot pool and plenty of shower and wash facilities. The breakfast is substantial - set menu so not lots of choice but plenty to fill up on. We didn’t eat in the evening as used local places in Gora but restaurant has a set meal each evening if you don’t want to step out. If you want to get going in the morning book your breakfast slot early as they can only cope with so many at a time. Overall staff and facilities all very good and I would recommend for a couple of days in the Hakone area.

We had a room on the 1st floor and we were told coffee was not provided, only green tea. However other floors got coffee. The thing we liked the most in this hotel was the hot bath and the sauna. In general we found the hotel quite expensive for the service rendered. There is a free shuttle bus to and from the train station from 9 am till 6pm.

Hotel Marroad is located near the Gora train station in Hakone (Google maps says 900m walk) , but a steep walk up from the train station - do not plan on walking from the station to the hotel with luggage! However it's only a 6 minute fairly level walk to the Koen-Kami Cable Car station, so during the hours the cable car runs one can avoid the steep slope if desired. The hotel is nice, with a classy feel, and we had a recently renovated room decently sized for Japan. The room still had new materials odor from the renovation, so we had to keep the window cracked open and the heater on. We really liked the toilet room separate from the sink/shower room. Quality of beds, linens, etc. all good, and ample towels & robes were provided. The staff at the hotel were all helpful and provided very good service. The hotel's indoor/outdoor onsen was very nice. However the hotel has a few quirks one should be aware of. Only one pillow was provided on each bed in the twin room we had. We asked the front desk for two more pillows and they were delivered promptly. There was no desk in the room. Only 2 lounging chairs with a small low table in-between. So the only place to use a notebook PC was either on the lap or on the very low table. I peeked into one of their not-yet-renovated rooms (on 1st floor) during cleaning and saw a desk. Hopefully they can add something to the renovated rooms so one can use a notebook computer more easily. The included breakfasts were good quality but limited selection (basically got to choose how your eggs were cooked) and one had to select a seating time the day before, so it was a little bothersome to have to eat breakfast on a pre-planned schedule each day. The restaurant served dinner but only if one makes a reservation the day before. Basically, the restaurant is hyper-focused on not wasting anything, so they need to know exactly how much food to order/prepare ahead-of-time. We witnessed another group struggling at one breakfast because some were vegetarian with no good choices available and a few asked for additional bread/etc. in place of the eggs/sausage and this became a problem as the restaurant did not have any extra to provide (hyper-focused on preparing in advance just exactly what was needed for the number of people being served each day). Both customers and hotel staff became angry during this event. Bottom line: I'd say the restaurant focus is unbalanced - too much focused on zero waste and not enough focus on serving their customers as should be the case for a nice hotel. The free hotel shuttle van to the Gora train station was great (call the hotel when you arrive at Gora and they will come pick you up), but usually only available from 9AM to 4PM. In our case for departure we needed to catch the 8:48AM train out of Gora and luckily their driver was in early that day so we were able to use the service, but it's not guaranteed available outside the 9-4 hours. All-in-all we had an enjoyable stay.

The room was excellent. We booked a large suite with a lounge in the middle. This room did not look like it is part of the same hotel. The hotel is a little worn down. Carpeted areas has stains, and the furniture looks old and worn. The restaurant has a set menu for breakfast and dinner, which you have to book in advance. Both were good, but you dont get to choose what you want. They are also very expensive. I recommend Zen Sushi, a 10 min walk from this hotel, for some lovely sushi instead. The Onsen was also worn, but the outside bath was very nice. The staff speaks very little english, and they find it hard if you have requests out of the ordinary. But they were very polite. We had good stay at this hotel.
