We were impressed by the ryokan. They have the best traditional onsen and newly renovated rooms. We enjoyed the meals there . The waitress who served us was very friendly and tried her best to communicate in English. We would love to visit again.

I had an excellent experience at this ryokan. I chose this ryokan because they allowed for single person stay, which can be hard to find. But even harder to find a onsen ryokan that accepts tattoos in their public baths. The room was great, the food was superb, and service was above and beyond. Spectacular.

Tsuta Onsen was a Godsend as it happened to have availability on the 2 nights I wanted. I had never been to Aomori Prefecture before and Tsuta Onsen was the best introduction ever. The journey on the complimentary shuttle from Shichinohe-Towada station is magical, especially on the final approach where the ryokan is surrounded by a virgin beech forest. It is set in such beautiful surrounds one only needs to go for short walks around (eg to Tsuta Numa) to relax and enjoy. The staff are amazing and they take care of every detail, from your shoes at the entrance, to providing gumboots. The room was impeccable. My room had a toilet but no shower as this was provided at the women’s bath area. It was no issue to me as I enjoyed the onsen thoroughly. The fact that the ryokan was built directly over the source of the hot springs is amazing in itself. Their meal service is impeccable, they even noticed from my first meal that I am left-handed and had my chopsticks set the correct direction from the second meal onwards. They used locally sourced ingredients and everything was delicious. The staff multi-task so well, going from running the reception to meal service etc. I had lost my glasses while out at Oirase Gorge, but the staff managed to track it down, and arranged for it to be sent to me in Niigata later, as I was unable to go collect it myself. They really went beyond their call of duty. There is a JR bus that stops briefly at the onsen, on a schedule, that can bring one to Oirase Gorge but I had to ask around the different buses to ensure I caught the right one & didn’t miss it. The video shown here is of the bath that one can reserve for private use at a fee. Tsuta Onsen was really very restful.

2nd visit to this charming historic onsen ryokan after a 15+ years break — lovely location with the ryokan nestled among the forest of Mt. Hakkoda. The natural onsen with the source bubbling up directly has been in operation for over 100 years — rare even for Japan. The common areas had undergone major renovations recently, and luckily in a tasteful style without overwhelming its historical character. For a change we stayed in the new extension (30 years old concrete block) in one of the larger suite rooms on the second floor overlooking the ryokan entrance surrounded by green forestry. The room is super spacious with large windows if not a bit on the generic side. The onsen with its elegant wooden construction remains the highlight, loved the icy cold water bath there, too. Food was served in a omakase style course menu, definitely got a huge upgrade there compared to my previous visit many years ago, exceeding expectations. The breakfast at the windowed counter table with the open view was particularly memorable. Great service, too! Would love to come back again soon, hopefully not as long a break this time round!

We stayed at their newly opened chalet room, a stunning addition to the historical ryokan. The room was modern yet well designed to keep a traditional Japanese ryokan feel. The in-room onsen (water coming from the ground source) is a great way to wind down and relax at the end of the day. The lounging chairs on the deck are also a nice addition. A super unique part of the room was that they have a O2 Box (hyperbaric chamber), it was a great way to reset the mind from everyday stresses. The food was delicious, using super fresh and seasonal ingredients from the region. A highlight was the sashimi platter which had the plumpest scallops. Tsuta Numa pond is walking distance from the ryokan, the pond is unique because due to the lack of wind blowing over the pond, the water is very reflective like a mirror, making a perfect reflections of the surrounding views.
