Health risk!!!!! Beware black mould!!!! Besides the very shiny floor, nothing seems to be cleaned! The stench gave me serious headaches!!! Faucets are missing... The health department should investigate!!!!!!

A highlight of our trip to Japan was a night at this beautiful traditional inn in late May. I booked on the official website and was able to get a better room than the travel sites. We stayed in Sakura room with a private onsen overlooking the river, private toilet and bathroom. Being vegetarian we didn't take the dinner option but had breakfast included. They have a set menu so we just picked the things we wanted from the feast we were given. The communal dining room was also very beautiful. A calm oasis after Tokyo. Highly recommended.

I think this is a nice Ryokan. I booked a room with a private bath, which was open to the outside. I definitely wouldn't use it at night because of all the bugs flying in, but then you have the option to use the shared bath. No one else went in the shared bath when I was in there, so I practically had it to myself. I think that's because it was mostly westerners staying in the hotel and they were too afraid to use the shared bath lmao. Probably also why they weren't wearing the yukata, which like...that's the whole point of staying at a Ryokan lol. My main issue is that when booking the hotel, it seemed like my package included both dinner and breakfast. For $200 for a night's stay, I would hope so. But turns out I didn't get the dinner, which wasn't very happy about. I think it's because there's a two person minimum, but this isn't made clear when booking. I tried to see if I could buy dinner at check in, but that got lost in translation. I thought I could easily find a restaurant nearby, but most of the restaurants were lunch only. Me and many other travellers resorted to eating at the convenience store because there were simply no other options. So I'd encourage you to double check what your package includes so you don't go hungry. Breakfast was good though.

I booked a room with private onsen, the room allocated on arrival was called 'Take'. I wanted a traditional Japanese style place, and Tonosawa Ichinoyu ticked all the boxes. The room had all the information on how to enjoy onsen, how to tie a yukata, how to make your bed (you have to do this on your own). If you wish to try traditional Japanese style stay, I highly recommend, although a bit expensive, the package included an extravagant dinner and breakfast. The menu and mist instructions are in English, the staff are as helpful as they can be given the language barrier, but maybe like the way in the room where all the information is provided, similarly the information on the order of the meal can also be provided. Also, if you wish to book a room with provate onsen, you need to book the stay package. This is not a solo friendly package, as the site only lets you book a package which is meant for 2 people, which is a bit unfair.

Interesting experience! A really special stay in such an authentic hotel. I highly recommend getting a room with a bath if possible. It's very cosy and pleasant to bathe near the roaring river. The room was quite cold (we stayed at the beginning of November) in the evening, although not for sleeping - the bedsheets were warm. You'll find them in the hall closet next to the room, by the way, and you'll have to prepare bed by yourself. The traditional dinner is also interesting, but the staff had a hard time speaking English and didn't really explain how to cook and what to eat first, so it was a bit stressful. You should definitely try this accommodation once and then decide if you need more comfort.:)
