Worst experience ever…. We had a reservation for 2 o clock but it’s been about 2 hrs of waiting here ..still we are waiting… Last time I came here about 3 years ago it was fine at that time but it’s not so good in these days …

Great doctors, nurses and staff and high quality of care, in a modern, comfortable environment. Expect to need Japanese to communicate, but this is a fantastic hospital. (ENT / Oncology)

For context, I'm a foreigner but a resident of Japan, with Japanese health insurance, and can speak the language pretty fluently (JLPT N1 and a manager at a Japanese company). In the early spring of 2023 I went in for a suspected heart attack on a Friday, arriving at the hospital at around 14:00. After recovering for half an hour, since I live in the area, while I was very weak, I still made my way there on my own instead of calling an ambulance. When I got there, the receptionist was pretty cold but I didn't think much of it. They said that it was just past visit time, but they could try to get a doctor to see me if I was willing to pay ¥11.000 on top of the other costs. I said yes and was made to wait (maybe 20 minutes), only for someone to tell me they couldn't see me after all. At that point I talked to the receptionist again and they said it was my fault for not calling an ambulance, and wouldn't even suggest anything I could do or where else to go. When pressed, they said to come back on Monday morning at 8 am. When I did, they refused to see me because I didn't have a presentation letter from another healthcare provider. It was an absolutely baffling experience, and seems from other reviews here that it's not so rare to get this kind of treatment at this hospital.

This hospital has an English website but doesn't actually provide care in English. During three visits to the orthopedic department, none of the staff including any of the doctors was actually able to speak any English. One doctor had a push to talk translation device but clearly didn't know how to use it, so he only used it twice to translate each a single word. I came very well prepared with my medical history and concerns translated into Japanese + records and test results from other clinics. My Japanese is at a JLPT N2 level. This hospital was still of no help due to the lack of care - contrary what the website states. The orthopedic department doesn't take any reservations for appointments if it's a first consultation. Be prepared for about 1.5 to 2 hours of wait. This is additional to the about 30 minutes it takes to get registered for the overall hospital and to receive a patient card. All processes and documents to get registered are only available in Japanese, but the extremely kind concierge from the information desk helped me to fill out the first form. When you arrive at the specialist department, you need to fill out another form - that one was available in English. Ironically, it even has a section where you can declare whether you only want to have consultations in English and that you are not able to provide an interpreter. However, this has no actual impact, the doctors might look at it and make a remark in Japanese and then proceed with Japanese only consultations. At the first visit to the orthopedics department, I only received painkillers and two more appointments for tests and getting the test result after a whole month of waiting. The test was quite lengthy and the young technician had to repeat one area three times because she was unsure of the results. She called in another technician for help, who just said "whatever, it's fine, doesn't matter". After a whole month of waiting I finally had my appointment to receive the results. It took me almost 2 hours to see the specialist doctor despite having an appointment. And it turned out that the IT system was unable to open any test results. The hospital did not inform me in advance nor did any doctor explain the situation. The specialist doctor Nishida kept talking to a younger doctor and the nurses as if I was not in the room. The doctors just kept pretending as if nothing was wrong and instead ordered me to have many x-rays taken. They also rushed off from the room ignoring that I had questions. Only the nurse was kind enough to explain the IT shortage and only she apologized. After another hour I received a consultation based on the x-rays. The doctor kept talking down and even told me that it was not my turn to speak as he "wasn't done yet". He also refused to answer more than one question I had written down in Japanese. He even stated that my information was wrong until the younger doctor looked up medicine information and confirmed I was correct. When I asked what to do now with the overall results, the doctor just told me to "exercise" and started to leave the room. When I stopped him and asked for more explanation and whether I should do physical therapy, he just showed me one single exercise for a few seconds and told me to never bend my arms again. Afterwards he proclaimed that I was now educated and should come back in 2 months. Also note that this hospital has many warnings posted that forbids any recording of the consultations. The doctors also all seemed paranoid that I would be recording when I took out my phone for using Google translate. Makes me wonder whether they got sued in the past. Overall, the hospital is very clean and obviously has a lot of money. At least billing is very swift and easy with many payment machines after waiting in line for a short while to hand over your paper form. By the way, consultation without any referral letters are an additional 7,700 yen. This fee also applies again if you come back after more than 6 months.

I had a great experience at Tokyo Medical University Hospital. My local doctor referred me to it after suspecting I had a problem he couldn't deal with. I did have a slight problem with getting referred to the correct department but after that it was all smooth sailing. The medical staff were excellent.
