  Okay. The food tasted good, but the portion was not enough for a lunch. The quality was of normal household. The female server at the entrance was kinda snobbish. As a local in Kyoto, I think she really is a Kyoto person lol About the atmosphere, there was only little lighting. It felt too gloomy and depressing to me. There were chatting madames, single customer, and friends studying together. If you are okay with the dark atmosphere, you will like it there and be able to enjoy a long stay.

  I've been associating Shinshindo with fancy breads, so visiting their honten was quite a shock for me. The atmosphere reminds me a lot to a bread shop in my hometown which has been in business since the Dutch times. I had a refreshing iced coffee on that day. Keep in mind that you need to order and pay first, only then you'll be ushered to your seats.

  I’ve loved Shinshindo for two decades. Unfortunately it is now run by a rude, officious and inept woman who makes each polite order seem like you’ve delivered an insult. She points out, after you’ve ordered, you are not allowed to stay in excess of 30 minutes, and apparently, she demands to know of Kyoto uni students whether they are ‘Japanese or not’. The other staff are nice as ever,but for me the chalice is poisoned.

  Food is only okay. Coffee is okay. But the experience itself is amazing! The coffee is pretty decent, the food is pretty solid, but the atmosphere is priceless. The service is really good too. This is your local old school coffee shop, not a Starbucks.

  A cosy place, great for breakfast. The sandwich I had here was so good, and probably the best bread I had compared to anywhere else, I never thought bread could taste this good. They do not have a good English menu unfortunately, but ordering should not be a issue.
