::The purpose of this hospital is so-called early detection of cancer. I worked at this hospital for four years. A particle accelerator called a cyclotron is used to accelerate protons and cause a nuclear reaction. The target is water, which has two more neutrons than ordinary oxygen. 1 liter costs 20 million yen. The nuclear reaction energy is 10 MeV. Irradiation start time is 4:20 in the morning. Irradiation ends at 8 o'clock. It was early in the morning, so I got up at 3:30 every morning and headed to the hospital. Once irradiation is complete, synthesis of the radioactive drug FDG begins. The time required for synthesis is 30 minutes. It will be done automatically. Once the synthesis is complete, the next step is quality testing. During the quality inspection, we strictly check 7 items to ensure that the FDG produced does not contain any substances harmful to the human body. This check is performed by a pharmacist with specialized knowledge. If there are no problems with the quality inspection, intravenous injection will begin at 9am. After starting the intravenous injection, the radioactivity of FDG is measured and the dispensing process is repeated, dividing it into syringes for today's patient. Fluorine, which emits positrons, has a short half-life of 110 minutes, so intravenously injected radioactivity disappears from the patient's body the next day. The day's work ends when the dispensing is completed for the last patient of the day. I think the end time of work was around 3:00 p.m. I went to bed around 8pm at the latest.
