::An absolutely wonderful experience. From the ease of being pick up at the airport (with a very short ride to the facility) to most of the staff standing outside waving us goodbye, truly a place that goes above and beyond. For an American with very limited Japanese, they had plenty of staff who could communicate and explain everything. Food was very, very good and we enjoyed having different dinners both nights we stayed. Facilities were extremely clean and in great condition. All of the onsen, especially the private ones you reserve, had great views of the river. If you are traveling to Japan and want to experience a ryokan but have limited Japanese, Ishiharaso is the place to visit.

::A magical place on the river. Dinner and breakfast were delicious and served with a view on the river. Our room was gorgeous and zen and the staff were lovely.

::Style. Lovely traditional ryokan Setting. Lush dense green hillside hotel overlooking the glorious and mesmerizing Amori river Explore. A base from which to explore Kagoshima. Only 2.5 hours flight from Hong Kong, then only 15 minutes from the airport. I was lucky to be here during sakura season. Rooms. 19 rooms. I was in 薄墨うすずみ ( Usuzumi ). Room did not have a shower/bath (toilet only), but had a pretty view of the Amori river and the thatch-roof houses on the other side. Lovely and beautiful even the day I checked out despite the persistent rain, enchanting watching the mist swirl and birds skimming the surface of the river @ the hotel. The view of the Amori really steals the show. Add to that, several lovely open air hotsprings baths options (rotenburo) to steam yourself in, ranging from: foot baths, separate men/women baths, two private ones you can book for total exclusion, to one that is mixed baths (would prefer for them to make it men or women only for certain hours of the day). All are so close to the source of the hotspring you can see it bubbling over. Food & drinks. Seamless service by the Taiwanese staff that took care of me. Exquisite sumptuous kaiseki meals in the converted historical 1931 rice warehouse Prices. $680 half board for two Rating. 5/5 rating Almost rated this a 4 as did not know that my room had only a toilet (no bath/shower), also my toilet sink looked so ancient I was tempted to clean the stains around the faucet. But everything else was enchanting….Next time I will book one of the renovated rooms !

::Everything exceeded our expectations here at Myoken Ishiharaso, from the onsen to the course meals, we couldn’t find faults with any aspect of our experience except for maybe adding women-only hours to the outdoor mixed bath and build walls and gendered fitting room! Through our stay, we really get a sense that the establishment wanted to preserve nature and its most mature state. Although the whole ryokan is built right next to the riverbeds, the building structures are designed not to impede on trees, rocks and the river. The onsen baths are of course the highlights here. Every bath offers its unique view to the river and a different experience of feeling at one with nature. The private paid onsen (at 1000 yen) was well worth the money with its unique LED lighting and an elevated view at the river. The course dinner and breakfasts were hearty, creative and exceptional and so were the staff who served them. I couldn’t be more thankful to both the Japanese and Taiwanese staff for their outstanding hospitality and thoughtfulness. They even brought out digital translators to help explain the menu. Please give them a raise and more flexible work schedules! Overall, I’d be back in a heartbeat!

::Incredible!! It rained the whole time we were here and it was so atmospheric. Very stylish and pretty intimate setting. We emailed the hotel to get a taxi from the train station. We loved the little touches like the resting room with jazz playing and ice lollies, the s’mores station with liquor warming in a teapot.. the baths themselves were a little exposed to nature! But ladies were offered a cover (we didn’t really use). The private baths were easy to book. At night beware.. you are in nature, we saw some huge bugs. The food was INCREDIBLE. Michelin level. we also arranged a massage in room in the morning. What a cool experience.
