Traditional style hotel with its own public onsen (private onsen available at a fee)but rooms are a bit dated and old.

We arrived in the evening and was given a room which was not clean. It was visible pee-stains on the toilet, stains and hair in the bathtub and in general a lot dust and hair all over the rooms. We understand that it can age, But This was wet marks and the thick dust shows that it has not been cleaned properly for ages. We talked to the staff in the reception and the only other option was to give us another smaller room with no shower since the rest of the hotel was fully booked. This was not an option for us since We booked and wanted a private bathroom and shower. The «solution» became that the cleaning personal went up two times more to Clean it again and it was still not better. Both times they were there not more than a few minutes so I dont understand How they can Clean a full hotelroom/apartment in 2 minutes. Since it was so late and fully booked around the town, We ended up Washing it ourself. The only compansation the hotel provided was 1000 yen discount per person, Which is Nothing compared to the total price which was originally over 23 000 yen. The only positive Thing was the lady in the reception Who spoke very Good english and tried to help. But because She didn’t have the power to make a decision, She could not do anything for us. She also told us that She thinks the fault was that the room was not ready when We arrived. But if This could been comnunicated to us from the beginning, We could have been more patient and understanding. Now This just turned out to be our worst experience with a hotel because of all the hazzle with going back and forth to Get it Clean, and it ended up not being satisfying cleaned. Keep in mind We did not use any of the other facilites since We arrived late and checked out early.

My first time trying a ryokan, and what an experience it was! I highly recommend this hotel at Kusatsu Onsen. The staff were very nice + friendly, and the location is good

Look elsewhere if you wish for a stress-free experience at Kusatsu. The hotel seemed old and could use some serious renovation and cleaning. Their onsen has seen better days, but the water was good.

Good hotel with on-site onsen hot spring experience. Dinner and breakfast were included in our room purchase. The set dinner was a kaiseki set with beef sukiyaki, sashimi, seafood, and assorted small bites. Breakfast was an AYCE self-serve buffet of some traditional dishes, including fish, cooked/pickled vegetables, salad, egg, sausage, rice/porridge, etc. The room is pretty standard, with tatami floors and thin mattresses for sleeping. We had three twin sets in the same room. The hotel provides yukata sets in the closet, which were convenient and comfortable to walk around in throughout the hotel. Most people wore them to the restaurant as well. Now for the onsen: typical Japanese onsen experience with separate areas for men and women. The general use onsen is on the 4th floor. I can only speak for the women's facilities. You enter into a locker room where you can store your valuables in a safe, and there are cubbies for you to put your clothes. Once you are completely undressed (that means everything!), you enter into a room with a row of showerheads (with a small footstool to sit on while you shower) to clean yourself before getting into the hot spring itself. There is a small cold pool and a large hot pool immediately behind the row of showers. In the next room over, there is an "outdoor" onsen which just has a half-open roof so you can enjoy the cold outside air as well. It started to snow lightly while I was there, which was a cute surprise. Be warned - there are no towels that we could find in the locker room, so make sure you bring your own towel from your room...otherwise you'll have to stand there and air dry like we did haha.
