We had a great stay and most staff was very friendly and helpful. However, the monk woman staff that was there constantly seemed to be mad at guests who don’t speak Japanese. She would roll her eyes and avoid conversation when we reached out to ask questions. We loved our experience and felt pity that one staff’s impoliteness and seemingly discrimination now leaves a very bad taste in our mouth regarding the hotel. We look forward to the hotel improving staff training going forward.

HEAD OFF THE BEATEN TRACK IN FUKUI and stay at Hakujukan, we stayed two nights one night is more than enough to see Daihonzan Eihei-ji, a 13th-century Zen Buddhist temple, which is only a five minute walk. We absolutely loved the breakfast and dinners here it was certainly a highlight of the stay. Although the accommodation isn’t cheap it does include breakfast and dinner for two!

A little difficult to get to the reception from the parking lot due to thick snow cover on the roads. Would be nice if a cleared path with shelter was made. Food was traditional and pretty good. Breakfast is vegetarian.

A peaceful place with superbly presented food. Quiet and clean, with charming and gracious staff. Good location for visiting attractions in Ono and Katsuyama.

Eiheiji - the highlight of my travels around Japan. And that’s thanks to Hakujukan for making me feel so welcome as soon as I arrived. Special mention to a mild-mannered man named, Kato who was very welcoming and whose kindness has left a lasting impression on me. Both the Washoku dinner and Kobachi breakfast were delicious. The outdoors especially on the grounds of the temple permeated with the lovely smell of the cedar trees. Just walking around and immersing myself in the beauty of it all created a space of no thoughts. Who wouldn’t find peace in such a tranquil setting? I can’t recommend this place highly enough but I must say I am planning another visit, hopefully, next year. Thanks Hakujukan!
