Pongyi is the best place we slept in Japan and perfectly represents the reason why I still travel in guest houses and hostel: cultural exchange and desire to share. Nina and Masaki are wonderful hosts and organize activities like origami and japanese writing of your name. They have a very interesting life and are happy to share it with you! We slept in the cozy traditional private room. Perfect for us three and with very comfortable tatami and futon. All the major sight are at walkable distance. Combini and laundromat are just next door and station is 5 minutes walk. Can't wait to come back!

Staying at Pongyi has been one of the best experiences during my tril in Japan. Nina-san and Masaki-san are the sweetest people you vould ever meet; they put their whole heart into making guests feel at home and they organize fun activities for them, such as learning origami or preparing matcha together. The whole place is very clean and well kept. I slept in the shared common dormitory, in which there are 4 beds in total. Despite the small looking size of the room, every bed has it's own private space, with plenty of storage room for your backpack, clothes and stuff in general. There is also a little fan, so that during summer it doesn't get too hot, a light and a curtain to ensure privacy. I absolutely recommend staying here!

nina and masaki (they have an excellent level of English) really go out of their way to make sure you have a good stay, and always have a smile on their faces. I'll have fond memories of the evening activities and discussions I had with them. I really thank you from the bottom of my heart. If I ever come back to Kanazawa, I promise I'll come back again!

What’s not to love about Pongyi. Masaki-san and Nina-san are some of the most incredible hosts. They do something every night with the guests, teaching origami, cooking traditional meals together, and engaging with guests. They are so warm and inviting and it was lovely hearing their stories. Not to mention the location is perfect. Close to the station, restaurants, and right across the street from 7/11. I only wish I could stay here even longer.

I stayed here in 2013, that was 10 years ago. Reading the reviews makes me feel glad that this place hasn't changed at all. When I was there it was clear right from the start that this wasn't an ordinary hostel. The owner, on my first night there, drove me, a female solo traveller and some Americans to a wonderful 24 hour public bathhouse so that we could experience a true Japanese bathhouse. He even gave us a tour of the place, explaining different parts of Japanese culture (like there was one area almost like an internet cafe with reclining chairs where he said many came to spend the night, as there were bath and food and internet). He brought us to a place to eat dinner afterwards and chat with us like old friends. He was a very well travelled man who told us great stories about his extensive travel (if I remember correctly, he used to be a monk in Myanmar or somewhere similar). On my last day there, another host (I'm not sure if she was the owner's wife) insisted that we must come and join the origami folding activities where we wrote a wish inside. The origami, if my memory doesn't fail me, would go to children in the hospital as good wishes. I still remember the faces of the sleepy and bewildered Americans who were dragged from their bed to join the origami activities. On a similar quirky note, I also remember being charged an extra 500 yen because I got lost and returned the bike 1 hour after hours with the disapproving glance from the host (like your aunt who disapproves of your inconsideration) It is not an ordinary hostel for sure, but all the more charming for it. If you are looking for a business transaction, stay and pay place, this place is not for you. If you are open for an experience, you are in for an unforgettable stay.
